Andy Carroll keen to reignite England career with West Ham goals

Andy Carroll says he knows staying fit and scoring goals for West Ham is the only way to reignite his England career after two years of injury problems.
The 26-year-old took great relief in scoring his first goal for 10 months against Chelsea as West Ham beat the Blues 2-1 at Upton Park last month.
Previously Slaven Bilic's side had impressed in away wins against Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool this season but struggled for consistency at home.
It was really important, the home record wasn't the best before then and beating Chelsea at home, it's a great feeling, and for me personally to get a goal again it's great," Carroll told Sky Sports News HQ.

"It was tough, it was hard [being out injured]. I just had to concentrate on getting back and I had my friends and family there to help me and support me.
"It was a nightmare, a tough time but I'm over it now and want to move on and keep myself healthy."

On his chances of an England recall, Carroll added: "That's obviously in the back of my head but I think at the moment I'm concentrating on being fit and scoring goals at West Ham and that's the only thing that will lead me there."
The striker also promised West Ham fans that he will not make any more defensive errors like the one that led to Watford's opener in their 2-0 win last weekend.

He failed to clear inside his own penalty area when he tried to turn Nathan Aké, but was dispossessed before Odion Ighalo finished from close range.
Terrible decision from me," Carroll said. "Obviously I'm there to do a job and I didn't do the job which I should have done and got rid of the ball and it is a mistake that won't happen again."
Elsewhere, the striker believes Steve McClaren is the man to lead Newcastle to safety after a poor start to the season.
Carroll, who left Newcastle to join Liverpool for £35m in 2011, thinks his former club will stay up this season.
He said: "I think they will. It's tough; they haven't been getting the results that they need but I think the manager will turn it around."

West Brom manager Tony Pulis admits sympathy for Premier League bosses

West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis has revealed his sympathy for under-pressure managers and believes they should stick together. The Baggies welcome an in-form Everton to the Hawthorns on Monday night, with the Toffees unbeaten in their last five games in league and cup. Everton boss Roberto Martinez managed to keep England defender John Stones from joining Chelsea this summer, rejecting three separate bids from the Premier League champions. Everton manager Roberto Martinez was able to keep hold off defender John Stones And Pulis admits he empathised with Martinez's situation and understands what other managers in the Premier League are going through, in all aspects of their job.

"Pressure is on you at times and you have to deal with it and handle it," he said. "Then other times it's not on you, it's on someone else and you have great sympathy for other people because you know what they're going through and what it's all about it.

"It's a tough old job this one." Albion took Midlands bragging rights with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa last Saturday, a match which saw them clinch a third straight clean sheet in the league. Pulis' side have only conceded league goals to Chelsea and Manchester City this season, but were beaten 3-0 in midweek at Norwich in the Capital One Cup third-round. "We've played six games and have four clean sheets. The basis of what we work on and talk about the lads have been very good at. Against Aston Villa we looked like we would score goals," he added. "We had looked threatening at times against Manchester City and Chelsea but without being really dominant in creating chances. Against Villa we should have scored more goals

Given the skeletons in his closet, Jerome Valcke should never have been appointed by Fifa

Surely the salient question raised by the scandal of Fifa Secretary General Jerome Valcke and the World Cup tickets is what was he doing in the job at all?
You may remember that when he was not in such an exalted position, he and the grotesque Chuck Blazer – he too was implicated deeply in corruption – appeared in a New York court on behalf of Fifa, trying to wrest the rights for the ensuing World Cup away from the holders MasterCard in favour of Visa. The woman judge scornfully threw out their case and accused them both of lying.
Valcke then flew back to Zurich and was briefly suspended. But in no time at all the smoke cleared and he was promoted to his present role. That was shocking enough, but the worst of it, arguably, was that not a peep of protest came from anywhere. No national association or federation deemed it apposite to criticise such a ludicrous and perverse promotion. Our own Football Association was among the totality of ruling bodies which had nothing to say or to object.

Which alas takes us to the abysmal phenomenon of Joao Havelange, in fact a far more serious and quite inexplicable case, that this greedy, corrupt and rapacious man remaining President of Fifa for no fewer than 24 years. By comparison, Valcke’s alleged offence, conspiring so profitably with one Benny Alon of JB Sports Marketing to flog World Cup tickets for as much as five times their value, seems almost trivial.

It isn’t of course: far from it. But the outrage of the offence itself surely knocks one more nail into Sepp Blatter’s coffin. How, in the name of good sense and morality could he have promoted Valcke after his humiliation in that New York court?
And to reiterate, how could the football authorities at large remain silent and unconcerned.

Alexandre Lacazette signs new deal with Lyon until 2019

Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette has signed a new contract with the club until 2019. The 24-year-old Frenchman, who had been linked in both the French and British press with a move to both Arsenal and Liverpool this summer, scored 27 Ligue 1 goals last term. “People can stop talking [about me],” Lacazette said. “Now I hope we will only talk because I am scoring goals and winning games with Lyon. Palestine drop Israel motion

The PFA was pushing for a vote on suspension at the scandal-ridden FIFA Congress in Zurich after accusing Israel of hampering the movement of Palestinian players.
It is also protesting the participation in the Israeli national championships of five clubs located in Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. The clubs play in the third and fourth divisions.
Israel has cited security concerns for the restrictions it imposes and the country's football association has argued that it has no control over security forces.
PFA president Jibril Rajoub said he had been persuaded to back down, but added: "I decided to drop the suspension but it does not mean that I give up the resistance."
That 'resistance' includes a demand that FIFA sets up a committee to ensure the free movement of players and goods, as well as asking FIFA to pass on a decision to the United Nations over the future of the five Israeli clubs in the occupied territories.
Applause broke out inside the theatre after Rajoub and Israel FA president Ofer Eini shook hands moments after the motion was withdrawn.
A suspension of Israel would have caused their results in the European Qualifiers to be removed, and Wales could have seen their 3-0 win in Haifa two months ago quashed.
Wales boss Chris Coleman admitted on Thursday it would be tough to see his side bounce back from such a disappointment as they prepare to face Belgium next month in a game that could decide Group B.

The Listed Gossip

ARSENAL IN FOR KONDOGBIA
If Arsenal supporters were going to choose one position in which to strengthen this summer, a defensive midfielder would be top of the list, quickly followed by a new goalkeeper. We've had rumours regarding Morgan Schneiderlin, Sami Khedira, Ilkay Gundogan, Nabil Fekir, Luiz Gustavo, Lars Bender, William Carvalho, Giannelli Imbula, Maxime Gonalons, Yohan Cabaye, Grzegorz Krychowiak, Marcelo Brozovic, Christoph Kramer and James McCarthy. There's a few options, that's for sure.

The final name to add to that list is Geoffrey Kondogbia, the France midfielder who was part of the Monaco side that dumped Arsenal out of the Champions League. The Daily Star believes that Arsenal will fight Real Madrid for a player only signed from Sevilla in August 2013.

Kondgobia is still just 22 and has been touted for greatness alongside Paul Pogba in France's central midfield. He has three international caps, making his debut against Belgium in the same month that he moved to Monaco.

Confession time: I giggle thinking about a team including Kondogbia, Pogba, N'Zogbia and Drogba. Can we make it happen please?

CITY WANT FIRMINO?

Manchester City have made a move for 23-year-old Hoffenheim midfielder Roberto Firmino, the Brazilian midfielder who has been tearing it up in the Bundesliga for the last few years since joining from Figueirense in 2011.
Firmino came close to moving to Borussia Dortmund a year ago, but is now the subject of fluttered eyelashes from a fair few of Europe's elite clubs. His transfer fee is expected to be around £20m, which is a bloody steal for a player with 34 goals in his last 68 Bundesliga games. Basically he's scoring at a striker's rate from midfield.

City's biggest issue is reported interest from Bayern Munich. Firmino is expected to prefer a move within Germany, and there is little doubt that Bayern would be a bigger draw than City for a young, hungry Bundesliga player.

So will City get him? Firmino.

Chelsea Will Never Be This Good Again...

The Champions League And The Old World Order
I watched Barcelona vs PSG last night and I thought PSG played reasonably well but were punished by a ruthless Barcelona and unfortunately the tie is as good as over. This got me thinking about the gap in quality between the two teams, I then thought about where they could both expect to be in a few years' time and this really got me thinking.

Because of FFP, Barcelona's success at a domestic and European level is sustainable, they are one of the richest clubs in the world. Barcelona could conceivably make their team better over the next few transfer windows (once they're allowed to buy again). PSG have financial resources at their disposal, but due to FFP (which PSG are already falling foul of), they cannot expect to close the gap to Barcelona. Worse again, they cannot hope to compete consistently in the Champions League until they earn as much money through gate receipts and commercial revenue streams as Barcelona - which may never happen.

So who can compete consistently with Barcelona? Real Madrid can, Bayern Munich can and Manchester United can (though they're nowhere near the level of Barcelona at the moment). Arsenal have the potential to be able compete, but at the very least it would take a long time and may never happen. I don't think any other club in Europe can compete with these four teams on a consistent basis. Basically, I think the Champions League is going to be won between these Big Four teams more times than not if FFP rules stay the same.

Think about it, who else could you see winning the Champions League this year? Atletico Madrid have a chance, but is their success in the Champions League sustainable? I don't think so. Bear in mind this is a club that domestically made less in TV revenue than Cardiff City last year, their best bet of improving is to sell somebody for a lot of money and buy somebody who's as good/better for less money - not something a club can rely on year after year. Also managers like Simeone don't grow on trees and unfortunately once he departs, I can see Atletico returning to the level of mediocrity (from a Champions League point of view) that preceded his appointment. Juventus and Porto (despite their good result last night) are in similar predicaments. Their problems are attracting, retaining and affording the players they need to compete at the highest level.
We see some of the same problems with Chelsea. Chelsea are a very good side, they bought Costa and Fabregas who've had a great impact on them. Chelsea are a sustainable club, they could have bought one of Fabregas or Costa without selling anyone/falling foul of FFP - but crucially - not both. So how did they afford both players (along with Filipe Luis)? They sold David Luiz, Mata, De Bruyne, Lukaku and Schurrle in the last 18 months - all for good money. The trick here was to sell players without making the team worse - and it's a great trick. However, who can Chelsea sell this year for big(ish) money without making their team worse? Cuadrado? Oscar? Both are possible but they're not going to garner as much money out of it as they did last year. Then you get to the question, what about the year after? Who do they sell then? You're into a football Russian Doll situation (no pun intended Mr Abramovich). So Chelsea have as good a team now as they can reasonably expect to have over the next few years, and while this is good enough domestically (and may well be in the near future), it wasn't good enough at a European level this year and probably won't be next year either.
